Branch Activities

The Norwich & Norfolk Branch of CAMRA has several regular activities which occur through the year.

On the first Friday of each month we visit five pubs in the Norwich area — our First Friday Five. This means that roughly every three years we should visit all the pubs and bars in the area!

A new initiative for 2004 were the Market Towns Trips. Pubs in market towns tend to be ignored (a lot of people like to visit pubs in attractive country areas), so this is an effort to check out some urban real ale outlets.

Several months of the year see us devoting a Friday evening to a coach trip to pubs outside Norwich, and we usually manage to visit five or six pubs on each trip, in the countryside and in market towns, so extending our knowledge and finding a few gems for possible inclusion in the Good Beer Guide.

Each year we usually have a branch summer outing (usually travelling by coach to a town within about 2 hours of Norwich) and for the past 3 years we have had a bowls match between ourselves and Suffolk CAMRA branches at the Crown Inn, at Burston. In 2001 and 2002 we also had a camping weekend at Winfarthing Fighting Cocks.

In 2000 and 2001 we had a Winter Ale Trail running from January to March. This involved visiting a mix of 40 city and county pubs, collecting a signature or stamp on the trail card, with all completed cards going into a draw for prizes from pubs and breweries. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there was no trail in 2002, but it returned for 2003 and continued in 2004/2005.
